Armoured escutcheons: your door's first line of defence

A good cylinder is useless if it can be drilled or pulled out in seconds. The armoured escutcheon is the part that shields it. Here is why it matters so much and when to fit one.

Quick answer: an armoured escutcheon is a hardened steel plate that covers the cylinder and protects it against drilling, extraction and impact, the three most common physical attacks. It's fitted in 30-45 minutes over your existing lock, with no building work, from €120. Combined with an anti-bump cylinder, your door is very well protected.

When we think about security we focus on the cylinder, but we forget what protects it: the escutcheon. And it's a costly oversight, because without an escutcheon the cylinder is exposed: a burglar can drill or pull it out in seconds, however good the cylinder is.

What is an armoured escutcheon?

It's a hardened steel plate (sometimes with extra anti-drill treatments) that covers and surrounds the cylinder on the outside of the door. Its job is simple but key: to stop physical attacks on the cylinder, which is the point burglars exploit most when they can't open it "finely".

What it protects against

  • Drilling: stops the cylinder being drilled to break the lock, the most common force method.
  • Extraction: prevents the cylinder being pulled out with grips or pulling tools (the "snatch" method).
  • Impact: resists blows aimed at snapping or shifting the cylinder.
  • Anti-bump reinforcement: some models add extra protection against bumping and picking.

A quick, cheap upgrade with no building work

The escutcheon is probably the best value-for-money security upgrade there is. It's fitted over your existing lock in 30-45 minutes, with no door damage and no building work, and it suits wooden, metal, reinforced and armoured doors. For from €120 you make a big jump in protection.

Cylinder + escutcheon: the winning combination

Complete physical protection of a door comes from combining two parts: the anti-bump cylinder (which stops fine opening: bumping, picking, impressioning) and the armoured escutcheon (which stops force: drilling, extraction, impact). Separately they leave a gap; together they shield the most attacked point of your door. At S1 Locksmiths we install both in the same visit, with a fixed price and a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an armoured escutcheon cost in Mijas?
From €120 installed. The price depends on the model and protection level; we confirm it over the phone before coming out.
Do you need building work to install an escutcheon?
No. It mounts over the existing lock in 30-45 minutes, with no door damage.
Does it suit any door?
Yes, there are models for wooden, metal, reinforced and armoured doors. We choose the right one for yours.
Escutcheon or new cylinder — which is better?
They complement each other: the anti-bump cylinder protects against fine opening and the escutcheon against force attacks. The ideal is to combine them.
Does the escutcheon also protect against bumping?
Its main job is to stop drilling and extraction, but some models add anti-bump reinforcement. To fully cover bumping, an anti-bump cylinder is best.
