Lock replacement: full lock or just the cylinder?

Many customers pay to change the whole lock when the cylinder would be enough. We explain the difference, when each is changed and how much it costs, so you only pay for what you need.

Quick answer: in most cases you don't need to change the whole lock, just the cylinder (the barrel the key goes into). You change the cylinder when you lose your keys, move home or want more security — it's the quickest and cheapest option, from around €70. The full lock is only changed when the mechanism is faulty, very old, or you want more locking points. Some locksmiths overcharge by replacing everything when it isn't needed; at S1 Locksmiths (Mijas) we tell you the truth.

What is the cylinder?

The cylinder (usually a euro-profile barrel) is the part where you insert and turn the key. It is the "heart" of the door's security and, at the same time, the easiest and cheapest part to change. You replace it when:

  • You have lost your keys or had them stolen.
  • You move into a home and don't know who has copies.
  • You want more security (upgrading to an anti-bump, anti-drill cylinder).
  • The cylinder is worn and the key is hard to turn.

What is the lock?

The lock is the full mechanism set into the door: it includes the bolts, the latch and the locking points that anchor the leaf to the frame. It's a bigger job than just changing the cylinder. You replace it when:

  • The mechanism is faulty (the bolt won't throw, the door doesn't close properly).
  • It's an old lever lock you want to modernise to a euro profile.
  • You want to upgrade to a multi-point lock for more security.
  • There has been a break-in or attempt and the mechanism is damaged.

Quick guide: which do I need?

  • Just the cylinder: lost keys, moving, improving security. Quicker and cheaper (from €70).
  • Full lock: faulty mechanism, old lever lock, after a break-in, or upgrading to multi-point.

The trick to avoid overpaying

If a locksmith insists on changing the whole lock without first checking whether the cylinder is enough, be wary. In many lost-key call-outs, changing the cylinder solves everything. That's why it's best to ask for a fixed price over the phone and choose an honest professional (we cover this in tips for calling a locksmith).

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to change the whole lock or just the cylinder?
In most cases changing just the cylinder is enough, and it is quicker and cheaper. You only change the full lock if the mechanism is faulty, very old, or you want more locking points.
How much does it cost to change a cylinder in Mijas?
A cylinder change usually starts from around €70, depending on the model and security level. We give you a fixed price over the phone before coming.
I lost my keys — do I have to change the lock?
Usually not. Changing the cylinder is enough to stop the lost keys working. Replacing the whole lock is only justified if it is damaged or you want to upgrade it.
How do I avoid being overcharged?
Ask for a fixed price over the phone and be wary of anyone wanting to change the whole lock without first checking whether the cylinder is enough. An honest locksmith explains both options.
Can you modernise an old lever lock?
Yes. In many cases we convert the lever lock to a euro profile and fit a security cylinder, without changing the door.
